Creating Your Own Carpet Cleaning Shampoo

We are asked quite often if there are alternatives to the traditional carpet cleaning shampoos, some of which may contain harsh chemicals or potentially toxic additives that are unhealthy for both your home and your family. The simple answer is yes – there are alternatives to the carpet cleaning shampoos you find in stores, whether you are looking for an organic, non-toxic alternative or want to utilize your do-it-yourself skills and create one of your own!

There are many positives to making your own carpet cleaning solution, such as being able to formulate it for your specific needs, having total control over what’s in it, and changing various products in it – such as varying the smells you decide to use.

Creating your own cleaning solution is extremely simple and affordable to do. It can be as simple as a few ingredients, or you can add additional products to cover a larger range of properties, such as having a foaming cleaner, or a different colored cleaner.

Here are our steps for creating your own organic carpet cleaning solution:

Ingredients:

1. Water

2. Distilled White Vinegar

3. Essential Oils

4. (optional) Food Coloring Dye

The process is fairly simple, you just need to mix a few cups of water with distilled white vinegar in a 3:1 ratio.

After you have your basic cleaning mixture, you can then add scents to the solution through the use of 10-15 drops of essential oils. Some popular essential oils for cleaning products are Lavender, Lemongrass, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, or a combination of all of the above!

This is where you can get creative and develop a cleaning solution that smells exactly how you’d like it. In many cases, the scents and smells from store-bought cleaner are created with harsh chemicals or perfumes, which can cause allergies to flare up or even contribute to health concerns such as rashes.

After you’ve added the essential oils to your choosing, you can then proceed to include 1-2 drops of a food coloring dye if you prefer, to help differentiate the cleaning product from others you may have.

There are also plenty of carpet cleaning companies that utilize organic, all-natural cleaning products in their services – such as our local Chem-Dry of Charleston. Be sure to check out your company beforehand if you decide to opt for a professional carpet clean!
